Chapter 21âRobbie
MOTHER WAS waiting for me when I got home. She was in the receiving room, silently perched on the edge of one of the Foretti Bergere armchairs. My aunt followed me in, but just nodded to Mother before leaving us alone. I knew better than to speak until spoken to, so instead I stood with my head bowed and waited. I had no idea what was going to happen, which made my terror grow until I was trembling, clenching my hands painfully in front of me to try and keep from showing it.
She left me standing for a very long time before dismissing me. âGo to your room. We will talk about this in the morning.â
âThank you, Mother.â I turned quickly away from the elegantly appointed receiving room, went down the hall to the left that led to a set of stairs to the second floor. When I got to my room, I found it exactly as I had left it. There was a double bed, desk, bookcase that held my studies and sheet music, separate stand that held my violin, and stair exercise machine that I used daily to run as long as my legs would carry me. Everything immaculate, as is only acceptable in Motherâs home. I stared out of the large bay window with built-in seat that overlooked the sprawling backyard. I had spent hours in that window daydreaming about nothing and everything. About where I would go and what I would do somedayâ¦. But someday had come and was now gone.
I quietly shut my door and turned to the right, stepping into the large closet to retrieve pajamas. The last two nights of sleeping in my underwear being surrounded by Theo flooded my mind when my eyes swept back over the bed, and I tossed the pajamas to the floor of the closet. A minor rebellion, but one I didnât believe Mother would ever know about. She did not invade my privacy at night, and I do not believe she had been in my bedroom since catching me handling myself. She didnât have to. She had impressed upon me how bad that was, and since I had never disobeyed her, she knew I wouldnât. The trainer was becoming more and more uncomfortable as memories of my life began to plague me. I went to the bathroom and showered, removed the plug, and cleaned it off. I couldnât bring myself to throw it away, even if there had been a way for me to figure out how to sneak into the garage and put it in the larger bin without anyone knowing. I stashed it in the tank of the toilet. I had some small inkling that I would be defying Mother by pleasuring myself in the shower with memories of Theo and may want to use the silicone in the future.
After my shower, I stared at the mirror for a long time. I was still Robert Ramsayi. Nothing physical had changed at all. Same green eyes, same dark hair.
